CardPG
A downloadable game for Windows
Overview
CardPG is a sandbox/proof of concept in which players can experiment with 2 different cards and familiarize themselves with a unique 3D movement system.
Design
The goal of this game was to play around with the idea of incorporating deckbuilding and card-based mechanics, like you see in games like Slay the Spire, into a TTRPG style combat system and grid map.
I follow a lot of Dungeons and Dragons content online (unfortunately, I haven’t gotten the chance to play much), particularly optimization. And one of the main criticisms I see of the current edition is that it isn’t well balanced between martial and magical characters. Wizards and other spellcasters are widely considered much more powerful than Fighters.
Considering that fact, the potential of cards and deckbuilding in TTRPGs really intrigues me. They make it easy to conceptualize new and interesting abilities that any class of character could have (that's another criticism of D&D, how much more interesting magic is allowed to be), since each card must justify its own existence as a unique option. But they also allow for more balancing opportunities because now we can play around with card costs and other card-specific buffs and debuffs, such as:
- This card removes itself from your deck when played
- This card must be placed at the bottom/top of your deck when you first shuffle it
- You may have no more than 1 copy of this card in your deck
And so on.
